Today's shout out for Black History Month goes to artists everywhere who honor the accomplishments of Black peope through art. 🖌The first mural was located near the Atlanta University Center (note: will tag artist). Unfortunately, the week of the Superbowl Atlanta had the building torn down. So the mural is no longer up. BLOG POST ON THAT SOON✊🏽 The second mural is located at the Atlanta University Center Library (note: will tag artist). In 1939 Hattie McDaniel made history by becoming the first African-American to win an Oscar for her performance in Gone With The Wind. She wasn't even allowed to attend the movie's premiere. She was also the first Oscar winner to be on a stamp! #blackhistorymonth

Today we highlight Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick chose to take a knee during the national anthem to protest racial inequality in the US (such as mass incarceration & police brutality). Because of his boldness he was black-balled from playing in the NFL. He definitely is #CourageouslyConcerned We also believe history will treat him well. ❤ #BlackHistory

Have you ever heard of Henrietta Lacks? Or maybe even HeLa cells? If not you should be thanking Henrietta Lacks! Her cancer cells are the first cells to continue to grow/reproduce... they're immortal. Her cells are important because researchers were able to create the polio vaccine and much more. Even though her cells were taken unknown, she was able to make an impact in the medical field. For more information check out the non-fiction book: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

Our Highlight Goes to... Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler!! Dr. Crumpler was the first African-American woman physician in the United States of America! She primarily served the poor and those who had limited access to medical care. "In 1883, Dr. Crumpler published a renowned book, Book of Medical Discourses In Two Parts, which many believe is the first medical text written by an African-American author, PBS states." #BlackHistory #blackdoctorsmatter #blackgirl magic

Today's Black History Highlight goes to the Atlanta Student Movement of the 1960's. The Atlanta Student Movement consisted of college students from the Atlanta University Center (Clark College, Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Morris Brown College, & Spelman College). The Atlanta Student Movement wrote and published An Appeal For Human Rights. These students brought about racial change in Atlanta and across the nation.

Today's Unknown Black History Fact Highlight Is On Charles Waddell Chesnutt!!! Chesnutt is considered to be, as Langston Hughes put it, the "first outstanding Negro writer of fiction in the United States of America". The multi-layered topics of racial and social identity in the post-Civil War was often the subject of Chesnutt's work. Chesnutt wrote as a white man for many years to avoid his material being turned because of his race. Many anthropologists termed Chesnutt to be a "passing Negro" (because of his family tree). Chesnutt was also a lawyer and political activist. #BlackHistory #UnknownFacts

James Weldon Johnson (back) and his brother John Rosamond Johnson wrote the famous song "Lift Every Voice and Sing", often referred to as the Negro National Anthen/black national anthem. James wrote it and John composed the music. The brothers wrote the song on Abraham Lincoln's 90th birthday in 1900. This song served as a beacon of hope during the time of Jim Crow, racism, and uncertainty. This song still serves a symbol of hope and change today! #blackhistorymonth #lifteveryvoiceandsing
