Clark Atlanta University has a unique history, much like other Historically Black College and University. Clark Atlanta University was founded in 1988 after the merger of its two parent institutions, Atlanta University (1865) and Clark College (1869). Atlanta University was the nation’s first institution to award graduate degrees to African Americans. Clark College was the nation’s first four-year liberal college that served predominantly African American students. Notable staff include W.E.B. DuBois. DuBois worked at Atlanta University for 23 years and wrote some of his most influential works (like Souls of Black Folk) here.
